How to find jobs in publishing

Local Bookstores are a great place to find a bookish job. Yes, it is retail, but many local bookstores have book buyers that work with publishers. They have promotions and publicity people that put together the book signings and events. It is an excellent way to network with people in publishing, meet authors, and make connections in the community.

National Book Chains

Book Distributors

Online Book Sellers/Marketplaces

Publishing Job Boards

Publishers

Independent Book Publishers the list above includes the major publishers and some smaller publishers, some with Indy vibes. However, check out this list from Reedsy of more than 30 independent publishers. Click Here

Freelance jobs are a little harder to find as you have to work to network and sell your services. Once you have determined what you want to provide as a service, begin networking on LinkedIn and use job boards like Upwork. Book Blogging is also an option with many affiliate programs you can apply for with many online booksellers.

Internships are another great way to break into the industry. Many publishers have remote internships available, and some of them are paid. Navigate to the internship page when you click on any of the publishers above.

A note to the reader: This is not a sponsored post, and there are no affiliate links. This post is meant as a resource guide to finding jobs in publishing. I only included sites with active career pages and job listings.

Please let me know if you have suggestions to add to the list. I would be happy to include them here.

Good Luck!!
